How to Care for Printed T-shirts

A printed T-shirt should age with character, not neglect. The fabric, graphic, and shape all need care if the piece is going to remain part of your wardrobe beyond the season.

Good care is simple. It is not about overthinking every wash. It is about small habits that protect the print and extend the life of the garment.

Wash inside out

Turning a printed T-shirt inside out helps protect the graphic from friction during the wash. It reduces direct contact with other garments, zips, buttons and the washing machine drum.

This is one of the easiest ways to keep the print looking cleaner for longer.

Use a cooler wash

A cooler wash is gentler on both fabric and print. Always check the care label first, but in most cases, lower temperatures help reduce stress on the garment.

Avoid harsh cycles where possible. A gentle or standard wash is usually enough for everyday wear.

Avoid bleach and harsh detergents

Strong chemicals can affect colour, print surface and fabric feel. Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach unless the care label specifically allows it.

A printed T-shirt should be cleaned with care, not stripped down.

Do not overload the machine

When the machine is too full, garments rub against each other more aggressively. This can wear down prints and fabric surfaces over time.

Give the T-shirt space to move. It is a small detail that helps protect the piece.

Air dry where possible

Heat can be hard on printed graphics. Air drying is usually the safer choice, especially for T-shirts with prominent print details. Lay flat or hang carefully so the garment keeps its shape.

If using a tumble dryer, check the care label first and choose a lower heat setting where suitable.

Iron around the print

Do not iron directly over printed areas unless the care label says it is safe. If the T-shirt needs pressing, turn it inside out or use a cloth between the iron and the garment.

Direct heat can damage the print surface, especially over repeated care cycles.

Store with space

Printed T-shirts can be folded or hung, but avoid crushing heavy graphics under too many garments. If folded, keep the print smooth and avoid sharp creases across detailed areas.

Care does not stop after washing. Storage matters too.

For Samson Mwita printed pieces, careful washing, drying and storage help preserve the shape, print and character of the garment.
